Description:

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a perennial aromatic plant characterized by its small green leaves and white or slightly pink flowers. It is known for its strong aroma and unique flavor, making it a popular ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine and herbal medicine.

Origin:

Thyme is native to the Mediterranean region, where it grows wild in dry, sunny areas. It has been cultivated for centuries for its culinary and medicinal properties, and its use has spread to many parts of the world.

History:

Thyme has a long history of use in various ancient cultures, from the Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans. It was believed to have healing properties and was used to treat a variety of ailments, from respiratory problems to headaches. Today, it continues to be valued for its health benefits and unique flavor in cooking.

Watering:

Thyme is a hardy plant that prefers dry, well-drained soil. It should be watered moderately, avoiding waterlogging the soil. It's important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot problems.

Pruning:

Regular pruning of thyme helps maintain its compact shape and promotes healthy growth. Light pruning is recommended after flowering to remove dead or diseased parts and encourage vigorous new growth.

Care:

Thyme is a low-maintenance plant that requires little care once established. It prefers a sunny exposure and protection from frost in winter. It can be lightly fertilized in spring to promote optimal growth, but overall, it is a plant that thrives in poor, dry soil conditions.

Sowing time:

In cold climates: : from March to June and/or from September to October.

In warm climates: from February to June and/ or from, September to October.

This plant does not need much water and supports droughts, so, irrigation should be moderated by avoiding soggy soils.
We can prune it to prevent from turning into a woody plant, and to stimulate its growth. We can be gathering its sticks to dry them and to be able to consume it.
