Cleome spinosa: The Elegant Spider Flower

Brief History:

Cleome plants belong to the Capparidaceae family and have a fascinating history. With origins in the Tropics, this family comprises approximately 150 species of annual herbaceous plants. Among their common names, "Spider Flower" and "Spider Plant" stand out. These plants have captivated gardeners and botany enthusiasts alike due to their unique characteristics and singular beauty.

Description:

Cleome spinosa is an annual plant distinguished by its upright branches and digitate leaves. It can reach a height of up to 1 meter. Its leaves bear glands that give them a slightly sticky feel to the touch. However, what truly stands out are its curious pedunculated flowers with four petals that can be a radiant pink or pure white, creating a stunning contrast with its long, dark stamens. This unique color combination makes it an ideal choice for gardens and pots.

Care - Watering and Fertilization:

To care for your Cleome spinosa, it is essential to provide the right conditions. It prefers a sunny exposure sheltered from the wind. Due to its sensitivity to cold, make sure to maintain mild temperatures as it does not tolerate frost.

Regarding soil, opt for a deep, light, and organic-rich medium with good drainage, which can be achieved by adding some coarse sand. Watering is important, but do not saturate the soil; ideally, water every 3 days, increasing the frequency to every 2 days in intense heat. Fertilization is not necessary if you have already enriched the soil with organic matter during preparation.

Adaptation to Cold and Heat:

Cleome spinosa thrives in heat and does not tolerate low temperatures. Therefore, ensure you plant it in a location sheltered from cold drafts and where it receives abundant sunlight. If you live in an area with cold winters, consider cultivating it in pots so you can move it indoors when necessary.

Propagation:

If you wish to grow more Cleome plants, you can propagate them from seeds sown in the spring, maintaining a temperature of around 18°C and under glass. Keep in mind that this process may be somewhat slow, but the result will be worth it when you see these beautiful plants bloom in your garden.

Cleome spinosa is a charming addition to any garden or terrace, and with proper care, it will provide you with its unique beauty season after season. Take advantage of its ability to form groups with other plants like Tagetes and watch it become the focal point of your green space.
