This genus, Bulbine, consists of almost 150 species of bulbous plants native to South Africa and Australia.

The Bulbine species originates from South Africa. It is commonly known as yellow bulbine, snake flower and cat's tail.

They are fast-growing herbaceous plants with linear, perennial, fleshy, onion-like leaves. The flowers are small, appear in clusters, are star-shaped and yellow or orange in colour. They flower in spring, although they may flower again in autumn.

It is often used in pots and planters or to form flowerbeds in the garden.

It is a plant that needs full sun or semi-shade exposure. It can withstand occasional frosts down to -5ºC.

It is not a demanding plant with the soil, with a normal well-drained garden soil it has enough.

Watering should be weekly and moderate in the warm season and every 2 weeks the rest of the year. It is a very drought tolerant plant.

This plant can be pruned to correct untidy growth. It is advisable to cut off the old flowers to encourage the flowering of the new ones.

It is sufficient to fertilise annually with compost at the end of winter. It can be propagated by seeds sown in spring or by division of bushes.
