Origin and description:

This genus, Bulbine, comprises nearly 150 species of bulbous plants native to South Africa and Australia. The Bulbine species originates from South Africa. It is commonly known as Yellow Bulbine, Snake Flower, and Cat's Tail. They are fast-growing herbaceous plants with linear, evergreen, succulent leaves resembling those of onions. The flowers are small, appear in clusters, star-shaped, and yellow or orange in color. They bloom in spring but can also bloom again in autumn.

History and uses:

They are often used in pots, containers, or to form borders in the garden.

Care:

It requires exposure to full sun or partial shade. It can withstand occasional frost down to -5ºC. It is not demanding regarding soil, as it thrives in well-drained garden soil. Watering should be weekly and moderate during the warm season and every two weeks the rest of the year. It is highly drought-resistant.

Pruning:

This plant can be pruned to correct disorderly growth. It is advisable to trim old flowers to promote the blooming of new ones.

Curiosity:

Annual fertilization with compost in late winter is sufficient. They can be propagated by seeds sown in spring or by division of clumps.
