Salvia splendens or Scarlet sage is a herbaceous plant on the Lamiaceaes family.

Its  flowering in red spike is not going to leave us indifferent during  spring and summer.

It is very easy to grow and very grateful, since it flowers for a long time.

Remove withered flowers to stimulate a new blooming, and even cut the younger stems for a more leafy plant.

Once the bloom is over trim the plant to approximately 10 cm from the base and protect it during the cold winter if you are in a very cold area.

Although it is a herbaceous perennial and will re-emerge the following spring, we usually tend to grow it as an annual plant.

It does not require a special soil, although it thrives much better in rich and well-drained ones to save it from stem or root rot.

Feed it with a liquid fertilizer for flowers plants to encourage and prolong its bloom.

As for pests, Salvia splendens usually does not suffer from them, however it could be attacked by any common garden pests, so we will keep an eye on it and apply the appropriate product if necessary.
