The genus Gynura belongs to the Asteraceae family and consists of climbing, shrubby and perennial plants. These plants are native to tropical areas of Africa and Asia.
The main ones are: Gynura aurantica, Gynura sarmentosa, Gynura scandens.
They are commonly known as Ginura, Velvet plant and Velvet nettle.
It is a herbaceous plant with a quadrangular stem and attractive dark green leaves on the upper side and purple on the underside. The flowers are orange and should be removed as they give off a rather unpleasant smell.
They are mainly used as houseplants in individual pots and in containers with other plants to create beautiful leaf contrasts.
This plant needs a very luminous exposure and average temperatures between 15-25 ºC.
As it is a plant of tropical origin, it needs a soil with a normal potting compost that can be found in plant shops. If it is to be transplanted, it should be done in spring or summer.
As it grows, it loses its attractiveness and therefore will not be as decorative, so it is advisable to change the plants every 3 or 4 years.
Water abundantly (without puddling) in summer and reduce watering the rest of the year, especially in winter. Ideally, fertilise every 15 days in summer with mineral fertiliser.
It is advisable to prune the plants so that they branch out and have a nice shape. If it receives little light, it can be attacked by aphids.
To propagate them, it is best to take cuttings at the end of the summer as they root very quickly.
