Dichondra repens also known as turf leaf, a popular grass substitute, is a perennial groundcover that forms a lush carpet of small, bright green, kidney-shaped leaves.

Its creeping stems root where the nodes touch the ground. Its inconspicuous flowers produce seeds that can remain in the soil for many years before sprouting. Soil-tolerant Dichondra repens is maintenance-free and useful for sites where normal grasses do not do so well. It is very attractive between paving stones and tolerates light foot traffic.

A great alternative to lawn, its main advantage over grass is that it only needs to be mowed 3 or 4 times a year. It can also be used in rockeries. Grows up to 5 cm in height.

This hardy plant is easy to grow and is generally pest and disease free. It does best in full sun or part shade, in well-drained soil. Once established, it needs to be watered deeply and infrequently. Allow plants to dry slightly between waterings.

When used in lawn situations, it can be mowed to a smooth finish. It is a native Australian plant.
