Fern. Nephrolepis Exaltata or Wild Boston Fern, or Sword Fern is a herbaceus perennial on the davalliaceaes family, although it is also included on the lomariopsidaceaes or nephrolepidaceae families.
It is formed by a big mass of long and narrow green leaves, which tend to gently arch. It grows quite fast, easy to cultivate, and is not a demanding plant.
When it is not established it needs a rich and moist compost and humidity in the environment, however once established, it can even be withouth water for short periods or time.
When it edges gets brown it is normally due to the lack of water or the lack of humidity, this is why it is a good idea to spray its leaves now and then with water, or to place the pot into another vessel with pebbles and a bit of water at the bottom.
To keep the green colour, we will feed our furn with special fertilizer for green plants, which will provide, at the same time, a better growth.
If we sow it directly in the garden or flowers bed we will try and confine it with some element of plastic or metal to prevent roots to spread over areas that we do not wish.
If in any moment we see that our plant has got damaged, we can always give it a good pruning, soon it will grow again.
Is very easy to divide it to get new plants, better during the spring.
With a knife cut the root ball in two or more pieces - it will of course depend on how big the plant is- and repot them into new pots. If you consider it convenient trim the longest leaves to shape and make fern to grow in a bushier way.
Fern not prone to suffer from garden pest attacks.
