Origin:

The rubber tree plant (Ficus elastica) is native to Southeast Asia, particularly India and Indonesia.

Name:

Its scientific name is Ficus elastica, but it is commonly known as the rubber tree plant due to its latex-producing capabilities.

Description:

Ficus elastica is a large evergreen tree with glossy, leathery leaves that are typically dark green but may also have variegations of cream, yellow, or pink. It can grow up to significant heights, making it an impressive indoor specimen plant. The plant's sap contains latex, which gives it its name and has historically been used to produce rubber.

Care:

To care for a rubber tree plant, provide it with bright, indirect light. It prefers well-draining soil and temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Regularly dusting or wiping the leaves with a damp cloth helps keep them clean and healthy. Fertilize the plant every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Watering:

Water the rubber tree plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, but avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Allow excess water to drain away from the pot, and never let the plant sit in water for prolonged periods.

Pruning:

Rubber tree plants typically do not require frequent pruning. However, you can trim back any leggy or overgrown branches to encourage bushier growth. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make cuts just above a leaf node or joint. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's foliage at a time to prevent stress.
