The Dracaena Marginata or Dragon Tree is a slow growing plant in the family of asparagaceaes, that can have one or several stems with several heads.
It is one of the most well known dracaenas and very much used as indoors plant.
It is a very hardy plant as far as we provide the proper cares.
When the enviroment is dry we need to spray its leaves with water as it needs hight level of humidity.
During spring and summer it is recommended to add green plants liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks.
Regarding irrigation, add water when substrate is dry, either you introduce the pot into another recipient up to the half of it, or add the water slowly on the top, in both cases we will wait until the substrate has taken as much water as possible.
Old leaves of Dracaena Marginata will become yellow or brown, then we will remove them. In any case the most of them just fall down by themselves.
In the case that most of the leaves are spoilt we can always cut its heads off in spring, and carry on watering and taking care of the plant as usually, very soon it will start to sprout.
Keep the plant clean and watch out to avoid pests attacks such like red mite - when the environment is dry and warm- or woodlouses plagues.
The most common varieties are four:
.- Dracaena Marginata:
Is the original one of green leaves.
.- Dracaena Marginata "Tricolor"
With three colours on its leaves: cream, green and reddish.
.- Dracaena Marginata "Tricolor Colorama"
Quite similar to "Tricolor" but the reddish colour is quite more intense.
.- Dracaena Marginata "Tarzan":
It is the most resistant of the four ones, and in warm climates can grow easily outdoors getting big dimenssions.
Colour is very similar to the normal Dracaena but it has a more rounded shape.
