Phormium tenax Yellow Wave (New Zealand flax) is a highly ornamental and robust perennial with a basal rosette of arching, strap-like leaves up to 100 cm long, heavily striped in cream, butter yellow and lime green.

The architectural, cascading foliage is crowned in summer by a spectacular flower stalk, with panicles of tubular yellow flowers that attract nectar-seeking birds. Native to New Zealand, Phormium tenax is grown primarily for its attractive foliage and makes an impressive focal point in the garden.

It adds architectural height to the garden and grows to 90-120 cm tall and 120-150 cm wide.

Winner of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor soils and even heavy shade. Salt and drought tolerant.

Deer and rabbit resistant. Ideal for flowerbeds and borders, urban gardens, coastal gardens, gravel gardens or Mediterranean gardens. Excellent as a container plant!

Virtually disease free. Beware of mealybug.

Propagate by seed sown in spring or by division in spring.

Remove dead or damaged leaves in spring.
