The sinewy plant, or Fittonia argyroneura, of the Acanthaceae (Acanthus) family, is a plant found in the tropics with showy pink and green, white and green, or green and red leaves. The foliage is mainly olive-green, with veins that take on an alternative shade.
The flowers are insignificant reddish to white spikes and tend to blend in with the rest of the foliage. The flowers of the sinewy plant are rarely seen when grown indoors as a houseplant. Hailing from Peru and other areas of the South American rainforest, this colourful houseplant needs plenty of moisture, but not too much watering.
This little beauty works well in terrariums, hanging baskets, dish gardens or even as a ground cover in the right climate. The foliage is low-growing and drooping, with oval leaves on stems that form a rooting mat.
To propagate the plant, these rooted stem pieces can be divided or tip cuttings can be taken to create new plants.
As the plant originates from a tropical environment, it flourishes in a high humidity environment. Misting may be necessary to maintain humid conditions. The Fittonia plant likes moist, well-drained soil, but not too wet. Water sparingly and allow growing plants to dry out between waterings. Use room temperature water on the plant to avoid shock.
Growing from 7.5 to 15 cm. by 30 to 45 cm. or more, the Fittonia sinew plant tolerates bright light to shady conditions, but will really flourish in bright, indirect light. Exposure to low light will turn these plants back to green, losing the vibrant veins splashes of colour. Growing plants should be placed in a warm area, avoiding draughts, which will shock the plant as will water that is too cold or too hot. Think about rainforest conditions and treat your plants accordingly. Feed the plant as recommended according to the instructions of your brand of fertiliser.
The drooping nature of the plant can result in an ungainly appearance. Prune the tips of the plant to create a bushier plant.
Problems with this plant are few; however, as mentioned above, excessive watering should be avoided as it can lead to root rot. Xanthomonas leaf spot, which causes vein necrosis, and mosaic virus can also affect the plant. Pests may include aphids, scale insects and thrips.
