The Capsicum hot pepper is an unusual houseplant that is cultivated more for its fruits than for its flowers. It bears very decorative fruits, which are green at the beginning and then become coloured in different shades ranging from yellow and orange to deep red.

The fruits are merely decorative, as they are usually very hot.

Decorative hot peppers are shrubby plants with dark green foliage that grow up to 38 cm tall.

In summer, the plant will be developing towards maturity and small, almost insignificant, white flowers will emerge. If the plant needs to be repotted, use a good compost and give your ornamental pepper a place with good light, especially when the fruits are ripening.

The temperature should be kept between 10 and 21 °C and watered during the growing season; it should never be allowed to dry out.

It is advisable to add a liquid fertiliser to the water every week. During the winter it is not suitable for temperatures below 10 °C. It needs to be watered a lot to keep the substrate moist.

Capsicum hot pepper can be propagated by seed in winter-spring, using good compost. It has to be kept moist and at 18-21 °C. Once the plants sprout, provide them with fresh air to prevent them from rotting at the base.

If the leaves wilt, it may be that you are not watering it properly or it is not getting enough light. It may also be that the temperature is not right or that you have forgotten to fertilise it.

On the other hand, it may be attacked by whiteflies that fly in clouds. Use a systemic insecticide to get rid of them. If thin webs appear between the buds, spider mites are present, and only appear when the air is very dry.
