Acalypha hispida is also commonly known as cat's tail, Acalifa, Felpilla, foxtail, turkey snot, Ricinela.

It belongs to the euphorbiaceae family, it is a shrub that can reach up to half a meter in height.

The leaves of this plant are perennial and somewhat hairy. Flowering usually occurs in summer, in the axil of the leaves appear drooping and long catkins 30 to 40 cm long.

The best known is the one with long red inflorescences of up to 50 cm. Other varieties have leaves of different colors, with shades of yellow, pink, bronze, white edges, red veins, etc..

It can be used as an isolated shrub, groups or hedges. It can be used as an indoor plant because of its showy inflorescence.

It is a plant that likes warm climates, without frost. Garden plant in sheltered places and semi-shade (does not like direct sun).

It should not be exposed to strong heat or drafts. It likes well-drained and very fertile soils (mulch, peat garden soil and sand, in the same proportion). It should not be alkaline.

Watering should not be very abundant, but frequent, even daily, so that the soil (which should not be compacted) can guarantee the plant the right degree of humidity.

Acalypha hispida should be fertilized every two weeks during the flowering period. It is often attacked by spider mites, aphids, mealy bugs, whiteflies and thrips. Keep in a humid environment to prevent the appearance of red spider mites.

If we have this plant in pot, provide fertilizer every 2 weeks during the vegetative period and until flowering. In winter reduce watering and no fertilizer.

Prune the side shoots until the plant reaches its maximum development to prolong its growth, then in successive years, prune the tips of these stems to produce side shoots.

Multiplication in the spring season by young cuttings. It is convenient to plant them in groups of 3 to 5 in small pots (10 cm in diameter) in a compound of mulch and peat, cover it with a plastic bag and keep the humidity by placing it in a warm and shady place.

It reproduces by seeds in winter under plastic and with a constant temperature of 20º C. It is a task for experts.
