This plant of the genus Calluna belongs to the family Ericaceae and is made up of 8 species of shrubs native to Europe and Asia. Some species of the genus are: Calluna vulgaris (there are many varieties), Calluna atlantica, Calluna erica, Calluna beleziana.

It is commonly known as Calluna, Brecina, Brezo, Biercol, Garbeña, Quiroga and Sardino.

They are erect or creeping shrubs that are barely more than a metre high. Their very small leaves measure about 2 mm and the abundant flowers appear in thick terminal clusters in a variety of colours: white, red, pink or yellow. They flower from summer to late autumn.

It is very hardy, often used for borders, mixed borders, alpine rockeries and even in pots and planters for balconies and terraces. It also has medicinal properties.

Although brecinas are best in full sun, they can also thrive in semi-shade. They can withstand sporadic, low intensity frosts, although it is best if the temperature does not drop below 5ºC. They do not like intense heat.

It is important that the soil is acidic (containing abundant organic matter) as it is a plant that does not tolerate lime.

It is advisable to water it moderately in spring and summer and to reduce watering the rest of the year.

A light fertilisation at the end of winter with manure is sufficient.

It should be pruned at the beginning of spring, removing withered flowers.

It should never be watered or watered excessively as it can rot the roots. Otherwise, they do not usually have problems with pests and diseases.
