The Vetiver plant, ( Chrysopogon zizanioides ), also called khus , is a perennial herb of the family Poaceae , whose roots contain an oil used in perfumes.

Vetiver is a plant native to tropical Asia and has been introduced to the tropics in both hemispheres, has escaped cultivation and has become weedy in some regions. The plant is sometimes grown as a hedge and is useful in dryland restoration to reduce soil erosion.

The vetiver plant is a large tufted bunch grass and can reach up to 1.5 metres in height. The leaves and slender stems are erect and stiff, and the plant has small purplish-brown flowers in long spikes.

The roots of this plant grow downwards into the soil and can reach depths of more than 3 metres.

It is a very drought-resistant plant, which is why it is used in previous reforestation work.
