Calendula: The Radiant Floral Jewel

Description and Origin:

The calendula family comprises around 20 species of shrubby annual plants and a few perennials, ranging from the Canary Islands to Iran, across the Mediterranean region. Crusaders discovered them growing wild in the Holy Land and introduced them to Europe. Legend has it that Saint Hildegard of Bingen bestowed upon the plant the name "Mary's Gold" in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Available Varieties:

Among the diverse selections are 'Pacific Beauty', 'Porcupine', 'Touch of Red', and 'Triangle Flashback'.

Care and Cultivation:

Calendula is easily grown from seeds, either sown directly in the garden in spring or started indoors for robust seedlings. Starting indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost allows for earlier flowering.

Choose a sunny location for cultivation, as they thrive in direct sunlight. Soil should be moderately rich and well-draining. While they tolerate adverse conditions, their performance improves with nutrient-rich soil. Once established, they do not require additional fertilizer.

Location and Companion Planting:

Calendulas make excellent companions in the garden, shining alongside crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, carrots, asparagus, and spring vegetables. They bloom best in cooler climates with low humidity. Pruning them encourages new growth and flowers when the weather cools, and although they withstand some frosts, their flowering ceases with more intense freezes.

Reproduction and Self-Seeding:

Allow some plants to produce mature seeds to scatter where you wish to see new calendula seedlings in the following seasons.

Calendulas, with their dazzling beauty and easy cultivation, will brighten your garden with an array of colors and radiance. At Viveros González, we offer a variety of selections to adorn your green space and enjoy the radiant presence of these wonderful flowers.
