It is a wide-growing, drooping plant with very long stems, which can reach up to 1 metre in height. They are perfect for growing in shady locations as an ornamental plant.

It is a very branched plant with very long and divided stems, provided with small thorns, which develop from thick underground roots, provided with elongated and fleshy tubers, greyish-white in colour. The leaves are very thin and needle-shaped, deep green, narrow and elongated and grow along the stems, pale green at the ends of the stems.

It is a summer flowering plant, the flowers are small, white, growing in clusters in the axils of the leaves, along the ends of the stems. The flowers transform into small, small, globular, bright green fruits, which turn bright reddish as they ripen.

They like a sunny or brightly shaded exposure, fertile, slightly moist, well-drained soil, they appreciate some sand in the soil composition, to facilitate drainage. They are suitable plants for growing in the garden in shady locations, but it is preferable to grow them in pots and on their own, so that their thick underground tubers, when multiplying, do not suffocate the roots of nearby plants, preventing their development. They are perfect for growing in hanging pots, or in high locations, where their long stems can droop freely.

Regular watering in spring and summer is ideal, keeping the substrate slightly moist, especially in young and recently transplanted specimens, adult specimens well rooted in the ground need less watering, they can even tolerate periods of drought. Watering should be reduced in autumn and winter when temperatures are low.

Remove the dry and damaged parts of the plant, cut the dry stems from the base. If the plants suffer stress due to adverse conditions, we can remove all the stems from the base, at the height of the substrate, in this way we will rejuvenate the specimens, favouring the birth of new basal shoots.

In climates with moderate winter temperatures, these plants behave like perennials, and can be grown outdoors all year round. In cold, frost-free winter climates, the plants may lose their stems and leaves during the winter, but if the roots and tubers are protected (by mulching), new stems will sprout from ground level when temperatures rise. In extremely cold climates, with frequent frosts, it is advisable to grow the specimens in pots, to protect them indoors or in greenhouses, at least during the coldest months.

They are most commonly reproduced by seed and by division of adult plants. The fruits are harvested when ripe and stored in a cool, dark place, the seeds are sown in spring. They are easily multiplied by bush division, by separating tuber and root parts from the mother plant with their corresponding stems, and then planting them in separate pots. Birds and wind also contribute to its reproduction by disseminating the ripe fruits.

This fern is a hardy plant that is easy to grow and does not usually have serious problems with insect pests or diseases, if growing conditions are appropriate. Occasionally, and especially in plants grown in poorly aerated conditions, mealybugs may appear, or spider mites if the environment is dry, sometimes aphids appear at the ends of the young stems. Affected specimens should be treated with specific insecticides. Excessive watering or insufficient drainage can cause rotting of roots and tubers.
