The genus Ruscus, of the Asparagaceae family, comprises 6 species of shrubs native to Europe, the Near East, North Africa and Macaronesia. Some species are: Ruscus hypoglossum, Ruscus aculeatus, Ruscus colchicus.
It has the common names of Bislingua, Laurel, Laurel of Alexandria. This species is native to Central Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
They are evergreen shrubs with flexible stems reaching 45 cm in height. The leaves are non-spiny cladodes (modifications of the stem) up to 10 cm long. The flowers are yellow but are not decorative. The red fruits (toxic if swallowed), up to 2 cm in diameter, are very decorative.
They are used to cover shady areas of the garden, in dark undergrowth and in pots. They are ideal for coastal gardens and combine very well with ferns of the genus Polypodium.
This plant needs a shady exposure. It can withstand frosts down to -9 °C.
It is a plant that grows in any type of soil but prefers organic matter. Planting is done in early spring at a rate of 3 plants per square metre.
It is advisable to water regularly, waiting until the substrate is almost dry; reduce watering in winter and increase it slightly in summer.
They do not need fertiliser.
It usually accepts a light pruning in autumn to maintain a compact habit.
They are resistant to the usual pests and diseases.
It is a plant that propagates by division at the end of winter.
