Each leaf is different, so you can enjoy an ever-changing show throughout the year.

It is a slow-growing houseplant that, when young, makes an excellent addition to your favourite desk or table. As it matures, it can reach a metre tall and wide as a houseplant. Believed to be native to the Congo, the Birkin is a self-headed philodendron (meaning it does not climb and support itself). Birkin is sometimes seen to produce leaves with red spots, or leaves that are completely reddish-green.

Birkin philodendron grows best in medium to bright indirect light.

Like many other aroids (plants in the philodendron family), it is sensitive to overwatering. Be sure to allow several inches of the top of the potting mix to dry out before watering again. This houseplant tolerates drought reasonably well, but looks and grows best if the potting mix is not allowed to dry out.

Birkin Philodendron likes medium to above average relative humidity levels. If your environment has particularly dry air, increase the humidity by grouping your philodendron with other houseplants. Or place a small humidifier nearby. Or, alternatively, grow it on a large tray of pebbles.

Fertilise your Birkin philodendron in spring and summer, if desired. Use a fertiliser formulated for use on houseplants. Follow the directions on the product container and avoid using more than the directions recommend. Too much fertiliser can cause root damage.

It is not necessary to prune Birkin's philodendron, except to remove old or damaged leaves.
