It is commonly known as Rhododendron, Ojaranzo and Revientamulas. It comes from the Caucasus and the Iberian Peninsula.

They are compact evergreen shrubs that can reach up to 4 metres in height. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate in shape and are bright green on the upper side and light green on the underside. The attractive large flowers appear in clusters and can be violet, red, white or lilac, depending on the variety. They bloom in spring.

They are often used in bushy clumps, as single specimens and in large pots on patios and terraces, as house and greenhouse plants.

This plant needs semi-shaded exposure in the garden and filtered light indoors, good ventilation is important.

It likes acid soils, e.g. a mixture of chestnut soil, peat and forest soil. Transplanting, if necessary, is done in early spring.

It should be watered regularly so that the soil is always moist (never waterlogged), as they do not tolerate drought. In summer it is advisable to spray the leaves periodically with lime-free water (indoors).

Before and during flowering it is advisable to fertilise this plant with mineral fertiliser every 15 days. In autumn, fertilise with compost.

It is not necessary to prune it, but the branches can be slightly trimmed after flowering to maintain a compact shape.

They can be attacked by mites and aphids if they suffer from drought or inadequate ventilation.

Propagated by cuttings and by layering in early summer.
