Gasterias are small succulent plants that do not usually exceed 40 cm in height. Their leaves are fleshy and appear in a distichous form (located in the same plane and alternately facing one side and the other of an axis), they are green and reddish in colour and have small white spots.

The flowers of this plant, which appear in long clusters, are green or red in colour and bloom in spring.

It is a plant used for growing in pots but can also be grown in rockeries in the garden.

The Gasteria needs a well-lit location but better without direct sun, which turns the leaves brown. They can withstand temperatures of 5°C.

It likes sandy soils, very well drained, with some leaf mould and 15% garden soil. It should be repotted every 3 years.

Water regularly in the warm season and reduce watering until it is eliminated in winter. It is advisable to wait until the substrate is dry.

It should be fertilised once a year (early spring) with compost or manure and fortnightly, during flowering, with mineral fertiliser for cacti.

It is a fairly easy to grow plant that can be attacked by mealy bugs in case of too much humidity.

It can be propagated from seeds (they take days to germinate), by leaf cuttings and by bush division in spring.
