It is commonly known as the small-leaved Ficus, the Matapalo and the Benjamin tree. This species originates from Southeast Asia and Australia. The main difference with the normal benjamina is its lighter coloured leaves.

It is an evergreen tree with slightly arching branches reaching more than 15 metres in height. The leaves are oval and pointed, and may be bright green or variegated, depending on the variety. They do not usually produce flowers.

Ficus are generally easy to grow and are used as houseplants, greenhouse, terrace and patio plants, as isolated specimens in the garden and in streets and public parks.

This plant prefers a semi-shaded exposure with direct sun in the early morning; young plants and variegated plants need more light. It is important that they are well ventilated, avoiding draughts. Mature specimens can tolerate occasional very light frosts.

It usually thrives in normal garden compost or commercial houseplant compost with a little peat and coarse sand to improve drainage. Transplanting is done in early spring.

It is advisable to water regularly in spring and summer so that the substrate never dries out completely (never waterlogging). In autumn and winter, water until the substrate has dried out.

Preferably, fertilise once a month in spring and summer with liquid fertiliser. In winter, fertilise with powdered organic fertiliser. The surface of the substrate should be stirred from time to time to facilitate drainage.

Lightly prune in early spring or autumn to maintain a compact habit.

The plants are fairly resistant to the usual pests and diseases.

They are propagated by air layering and by semi-woody cuttings.
