Myoporum is an evergreen perennial plant native to Australia. It is a prostrate shrub with narrow, semi-succulent leaves, spreading up to 3 metres from the base of the plant. In spring, myoporum is covered with small white flowers, followed by small purple berries.

Uses

Myoporum is a spreading plant that forms a dense carpet of foliage, making it a good choice for use in large areas where you want green cover but don't want to mow your lawn. Its semi-succulent leaves mean that it cannot withstand foot traffic. Its low water requirement makes it a recommended groundcover in areas where water conservation is important.

Sowing

The best time is spring, when the danger of frost has passed. It needs a well-draining soil, but can be clayey, loamy or sandy. The pH of the soil should be below 7.0. Adding peat moss before planting will help reduce the pH of alkaline soils. Space plants 1.5 to 1.6 metres apart, digging each hole deep enough to accommodate roots. A thin layer of mulch, about 5 cm thick, can be added at planting time to help the soil retain water, although the myoporum will act as its own mulch once it has spread.

Sun, water and fertiliser

Myoporum thrives in full sun or partial shade. When newly planted, water weekly or when the top 5 cm of soil dries out. Once established, the shrub does not need much water. A deep watering every week or two in summer, less frequently in autumn and winter, is all it needs. Add a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser at planting time, and again each year after pruning. Follow the manufacturer's label instructions for dosages.

Pruning

Myoporum is a fast grower, so it may need to be pruned several times during the growing season if you want to maintain a specific shape or height. The shrub grows about 15 cm tall. Use secateurs to keep it shorter, or use secateurs to cut individual stems. As the shrub ages, bare areas may emerge. Take cuttings from the current year's growth and plant the hardened off cuttings to fill in the gaps.
