The genus Sedum belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Some species of this genus are: Sedum morganianum, Sedum spurium, Sedum palmeri.

Also known as Burrito, Borrego, Cola de borrego, Cola de burro, Trenza de gitana and Trenza de india. It is a species native to southern Mexico and Central America.

They are evergreen succulent plants with an upright habit that becomes drooping with age. Stems can be 40-50 cm long. They have fleshy lanceolate leaves, close together and of a beautiful bluish-green colour. The flowers appear at the tip of the stems and are red or pink in colour. They flower in late spring and early summer.

They are used in pots and hanging planters (indoors or outdoors) and are also useful in rockeries and low walls.

They tolerate full sun but prefer light shade or a well-lit site but avoid direct midday sun. In winter it is best not to expose them to temperatures below 5 ºC.

They prefer a well-draining and fairly loose soil, for which a commercial substrate for cacti and succulents can be used. Pot transplanting or planting is carried out in the spring season.

They are very drought-resistant, but they need regular watering in spring and summer, but always wait until the soil has dried out. From autumn onwards, watering should be greatly reduced and eliminated completely in winter.

A light composting in early spring is more than enough.

To remove dry stems and wilted flowers, it can be lightly pruned.

It is quite resistant to attack by pests and diseases that only fear over-watering.

It is most easily propagated by stem cuttings which should be handled with care as the leaves fall off easily.
