Osmanthus heterophyllus, Osmantus or Fragrant Lilac belongs to the Oleaceae family and is part of the genus Osmanthus, which is made up of about 40 species of shrubs and trees native to Mexico, the Far East and the eastern USA.

It is commonly known as Osmantus, Osmanthus, Chinese holly, fragrant olive and fragrant lilac because of the pungent scent of its flowers.

They are shrubs and trees with evergreen, leathery, opposite, oval-lanceolate leaves. The flowers are small, fragrant and appear in white axillary clusters. They flower in spring.

It is a plant used to create groups in the garden in combination with other shrubs. They can also be grown in large pots.

This plant can thrive in full sun and semi-shade exposures. Its ideal annual temperature is between 10-20 ºC. It can withstand sporadic, low intensity frosts.

The ideal soil for these shrubs is well drained, rich in humus and with a certain capacity to retain moisture. Transplanting is best done in the autumn or spring, watering the soil well before planting.

It should be watered moderately all year round.

Ideally, it should be fertilised with a good supply of manure at the time of planting and with a mineral fertiliser at the end of winter.

Prune the bush every 2 years to shape the plant.

The plants are resistant to the most common pests and diseases.

They can be propagated by cuttings taken at the end of summer.
