If your answer is "the Poinsettia", try again.

It's not that we don't like this plant. It is one of our favourites, surely yours too.

But there is a world beyond poinsettia.

Therefore, in this article we want to talk about other typical Christmas plants. Some in which surely you do not think so often, but that will also give a touch of colour to your home during the holidays.

Do you want to know which they are? Keep reading!

Seven different Christmas plants

Holly (Ilex aquifolum)

If you are looking for a Christmas plant with red berries, holly is one of your best options.

This shrub is recognizable throughout the world for its spiny leaves and for the intense colour of its fruits. It works well both indoors and outdoors.

As an indoor plant, it is often used as a Christmas centrepiece. At the end of holidays, we can keep it in a pot or transplant it to the garden.

This bush withstands the cold very well, but may have problems with heat. We will place it in shaded area, and in summer we will water it almost daily.

In autumn it is convenient to prune its branches. Thus, they will strongly rebound during spring.

It is a very decorative shrub, but remember that its berries are toxic if ingested. If you have small children or animals at home you can opt for the Butcher’s room, which looks similar but is less dangerous, or choose another plant from this list.

Mistletoe (Viscum album)

Are you also one of those who believes that holly and mistletoe are the same? Think again.

The leaves of both are similar, but in reality they are very different plants.

Holly is a shrub, while mistletoe is a plant that grows entangled in the trunk of trees. Another difference is that, while the holly has red fruits, the mistletoe berries are white.

In addition, the mistletoe has its own tradition: if a couple kisses under a branch of mistletoe, they will have good luck and their love will last a lifetime. It is a very popular custom in the United States and Latin America.

It is a vine without roots, which gives us a lot of freedom to use it as a Christmas ornament.

Finding mistletoe branches is easier than growing it in your garden. This plant is semi-parasitic, which means that it grows by feeding on other trees.

In fact, as we mentioned, the mistletoe does not even have proper roots. It feeds on the sap of the tree it parasites.

If you want to grow mistletoe, the one you should take care of is the host tree. Through its sap, the mistletoe will absorb the nutrients and water it needs to grow.

In case you decide to grow mistletoe in your garden, make sure that the tree in which you plant it is always kept in perfect conditions.

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera)

This species of cactus is very popular because of its flowering, which occurs in the winter months. Thus, it is a perfect indoor plant to give colour to our home.

The flowers are red, white or pink and flared. The stems soon acquire a hanging bearing, which causes the flowers to fall beautifully around the plant.

This plant needs to receive filtered light throughout the year, with temperatures exceeding 15º. That is why it is a perfect copy to have indoors.

Despite being a cactus, it comes from the tropical areas of Brazil, so it needs a lot of humidity. Between each irrigation we must let the substrate dry, but we may often spray water over the leaves.

Overwatering is the biggest enemy of this plant, and can lead to the appearance of fungi.

Nandina (Nandina domestica)

If you are looking for a colourful Christmas plant with red berries, Nandina is a good option.

This is an evergreen shrub. However, in autumn all its foliage acquires a beautiful red hue. In addition, from the end of summer its branches are covered with berries of the same colour, which will remain until spring.

It is a very resistant shrub that hardly needs care. You can sow it in a pot to use it as an indoor decorative plant.

Except to eliminate dried and diseased branches or shape it, this shrub does not need to be pruned. If you leave space, it will grow to 2 meters high.

Outdoors, it supports heavy frosts. Place it in the sun and let it get cold so that its leaves acquire that characteristic red colour in autumn.

Cyclamen

We have already talked to you more than once about Cyclamen in our blog [link], and with good reason. This plant has a lot to offer for those who enjoy having flowers all year long.

The Cyclamen unfolds its colourful petals during the winter season. The flowers can be from white to pink or purple and give off a pleasant aroma. It is a very suitable plant to decorate our home at Christmas.

How to take care of Cyclamen

Usually, cyclamen flowers last shortly. But if we take care of them properly, you can keep them for up to three or four months.

The most important thing is that we imitate the conditions it would have in its natural habitat. Therefore, we must place it in wide and well-ventilated spaces, where it receives filtered light. It is very important to keep it away from heat sources such as radiators or heaters, which could dry the plant.

When watering it, we must prevent the leaves from getting wet. It is better to irrigate it by capillarity or immersion, without watering the bulb.

If you want the flowers to last longer, keep it outside a few hours a day, protected from rain and wind. This plant is used to cold.

Christmas rose (Helleborus niger)

Its own name identifies it as a Christmas plant.

The Christmas Rose has a spectacular resistance to cold. It can withstand even snow or frost and recover when temperatures rise.

Its petals are shown in different colours: purple, pink, white, red and even yellow.

It blooms between November and March.

To develop more flowers, we must place the Christmas Rose in an area with plenty of light. It withstands the cold very well, although when it freezes, we must avoid watering it.

Pay it every fifteen days or so to maintain its full strength.

Knight’s star (Hippeastrum)

This plant is ideal for Christmas for two reasons: the first one is that it blooms in winter. The second, the impressive red hue of its petals and the size of its flowers.

The Knight’s star is an eye-catching plant. Its long stem allows us to place it as a decorative element in any corner.

When watering it, we must be careful not to flood the bulb. The Knight’s Star needs a lot of moisture, so we can spray the leaves when we see it dry.

Its ideal growth temperature is between 15 and 18º C. We can place it a few hours outside, trying to get indirect sun in the central hours of the day.
