Achillea millefolium is an elegant perennial wildflower that produces abundant, huge, flat clusters, 12 cm in diameter, filled with 20 to 25 flowers of different colours. They are borne on tall stems above green, pleasantly aromatic, fern-like, disease-resistant foliage.
Both flowers and foliage are attractive and long-lasting, making this species a wonderful garden plant and a great choice for meadow plantings.
Flowering for weeks from early to late summer, this striking beauty easily brightens up any sunny corner of the garden.
Easy to care for, tolerant of drought, heat, humidity, deer and rabbits, Achillea is a perennial that has many qualities in addition to its good looks.
It grows to 60-90 cm tall and 30-45 cm in sturdy, upright clumps.
It grows in full sun in medium, dry to moderately moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates light shade, but best colouring and flowering is obtained in full sun. Also tolerates dry soils. Avoid rich, moist soils that will make your Achillea flabby or leggy. Good drainage is essential.
A vital member of herbaceous borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, coastal gardens, meadows or prairies. Yarrow is also appreciated for the excellent quality of its cut flowers, either in bouquets or in dried flower arrangements.
Yarrow is a must if you want to attract butterflies.
Deadheading will prolong the flowering season and prevent your yarrow from spreading by seed. Cutting back after initial flowering will promote regrowth. This plant actively self-seeds and can quickly naturalise if left unattended.
Native to Europe, western Asia and North America.
Yarrow, commonly known as Yarrow, belongs to the Asteraceae family, which also includes asters, chrysanthemums and sunflowers. The genus is named after Achilles, hero of the Trojan wars in Greek mythology, who used the plant to stop bleeding and heal the wounds of his soldiers.
Achillea millefolium (common yarrow) is native to most of Europe and temperate areas of western Asia. This perennial, which brightens up the garden all summer long, is versatile, easy to propagate and available in a wide range of sizes and colours.
